A Generalized Predictive Controller for a Wind Turbine Providing Frequency Support for a Microgrid

The power system is moving away from the centralized generation paradigm. One of current trends microgrid concept, where loads, small generators and renewable energy resources (RERs) that are in close proximity controlled as one entity. Microgrids also allow for an increase availability they can continue to supply electric loads even absence a connection main grid. During transition islanded operation, microgrids may be subject frequency disturbances caused by imbalance between load generation. When contain high shares energy, challenge significantly higher due control strategies aim maximize production, which typically applied RERs render them insensitive grid changes. Therefore, new need developed enable participation support response. This work proposes predictive strategy based on generalized controller (GPC) being side converter doubly fed induction generator (DFIG) wind turbine capabilities. objective was track time varying reference signal generated according deviation nominal frequency, thereby enabling storage device inject into without communication system. GPC belonging family model controllers (MPCs), principles use predict future states choice optimal input ensure values followed. To validate proposed strategy, simulated MATLAB Simscape Electrical. response using compared another MPC-based known finite set, scenario DFIG not equipped with results show able improve microgrid, reduce oscillations value nadir.
